January Wishlist

January Wishlist

I think it’s safe to say my Polyvore skills aren’t exactly amazing. I couldn’t be bothered with PhotoShop today but it’s currently 33 degrees Celsius which I think makes a bit of laziness acceptable.  I’ve had myself on a bit of a shopping ban for the past few weeks so I hadn’t even been looking at online stores because I didn’t want to know what amazing things I wasn’t buying. I decided to let myself have a little look and got so carried away on ASOS that I didn’t let myself go any further into wishlist creating (apart from that amazing dress from Bernie Dexter that actually showed up on my tumblr dashboard). I’m attempting to only buy things that are somewhat work appropriate (but still a bit fun) for my new job since business/corporate clothing is a bit depressing and boring but it’s so far from my usual taste that it’s really hard to find a happy medium.

Heaps Cool Stuff

Apologies for my absence/lack of posts lately. I know it generally sounds pretty wanky/self important when bloggers act as though everyone is constantly refreshing waiting for their new post but I don’t know, I’ve been feeling a bit uninspired and been having a weird month so I haven’t been updating much even though I want to be posting 3 or 4 times a week. I’m starting a new job next week and I’m hoping that will help with a new routine with lots of blogging and with that in mind, here’s some heaps cool stuff.

DIY: all you need is some clear plates and some scrap booking paper and ta-da!

This mug changes from sleepy face to awake when you add hot coffee (or tea. or probably hot chocolate). How cute.

I’m generally not that into clutches but these Kate Spade book clutches are pretty cool. (Brought to my attention by Oh Happy Day).

I think I’ve mentioned before how beautiful I think Colorado is but here’s another reason I want to go there – The Stanley Hotel! It’s beautiful, reportedly haunted and was the inspiration for Stephen King’s ‘The Shining’. Apparently they play the Kubrick version on a loop on channel 42 on the televisions in all the guest rooms.

Speaking of The Shining, lately I’ve been really into ‘making of’ documentaries. ‘The Making of The Shining’ (shot by Stanley Kubrick’s then 17 yr old daughter Vivian) is on YouTube in full and I also recommend Hearts of Darkness.

Have you guys ever heard of fatal familial insomnia? Basically it’s permanent insomnia that eventually kills you. Pretty scary stuff.

I love Kelli Connell‘s ‘Double Life’ images. She scans in two or more negatives from self portraits and edits them to look like there are two different people in the photo.

I love obsessing over houses I will never own (now that I know I have to move out of my current house by the end of March I’m finding myself doing this more and more) and this L-Stack House (designed by Marlon Blackwell Architects) in Fayetteville, Arkansas USA is beautiful. I love the window boxes and floor to ceiling glass doors.

Henry Miller’s eleven commandments (from Henry Miller on Writing).

My favourite of all the ‘shit ____ says’ videos – Shit Liza Says!

Lesley Kinzel wrote a great article for XOJane about fat shaming.

Instagram Thursday!

We went to our first wedding last week! It was Tom’s cousin’s and it was super fun. My dress is from JezzyBelles and Tom’s face is from being sad that he had to wear a shirt and tie.

Hanging out with Zigmond.

Trying on clothes at Dream Diva.

I’ve finally mastered the delicious art of homemade baked beans.

Zigmond cuddling with his father.

I ate this amazing pizza the other day.

And we finally made it to the beach for the first time all summer!

As always if you guys want to be Instagram friends my name on there is bronnyzig :)

Heaps Cool Stuff

BRB guys, I’m just going to the 1970′s so that I can have a pet lion.

The lovely Rachele of The Near Sighted Owl made this amazing digital portrait of me! How sweet is that?! You can also commission your own digital portrait from her here.

Aetienne shows how to make your own mirrored collar using broken CDs. This looks both surprisingly easy and awesome.

On a scale of 1 – 10 how wrong would it be for me to put one of my cats in a pram? Probably pretty wrong, hey? Still, Suki the Siamese looks adorable.

20 Reasons Why We Still Need The ‘F’ Word.

Gifolas Cage – fairly self-explanatory.

Meme Proposal | Tim * Audrey from Crazy Monkey Studio on Vimeo. So nerdy, so cute!

Photographs depicting the final 12 hours of Chinese women on death row. They were convicted of drug related offenses and are mostly in their 20′s.

Meet The Sponsors

I’ve been accepting sponsors/advertisers on FAT AUS for a few months now and I thought I would give my lovely sponsors a chance to tell you guys a little about their blogs/businesses and hopefully you’ll find something you enjoy on their sites. I am really picky about which blogs/businesses I accept as advertisers on here, I only work with brands that I feel are appropriate for that and that I personally believe in and think reflect my and the blog’s style. Anyway, enough out of me – meet the sponsors!

JEZZY BELLE’S VINTAGE

Hi, I’m Deborah! I run Jezzy Belle’s Vintage out of my little apartment in Knoxville, where I live surrounded by boxes. My husband, daughter and borderline obese cat take up the space that the boxes don’t. I’m a classic collector, I fall in love with pieces. I imagine stories for them, invest emotions in them. So basically if I didn’t run Jezzy Belle’s I’d be starring on my very own episode of Hoarders. I’m drawn to things with sparkle, loud colors and obnoxious patterns. If it might run a little too tight, a little too low cut or just a little Too Much, it makes me happy. I love sharing pieces with other collectors and there is little that makes me happier than photos of gloriously obnoxious gems on my lovely customers. Things have been a little crazy the last few months, (I’ve moved TWICE. YEAH.) but now that we’re settled in Tennessee I’m really looking forward to getting back into the swing of things both with my shop and with my blog. And getting to know more of my customers!

POP CULTURE MAJOR

Pop Culture Major started because I got tired of submitting posts to other sites and decided to take charge and do it on my own for once. My name is Dani and lemme be for real, I’m a lazy person and I’ll take the easiest way out always but for some reason, my love of pop culture propelled me to say “Hey, I’m gonna start my own blog and do things on my own terms!” Of course it was admirable and cute of me to think it’d be so easy but damn is it hard. You basically have to be online at all times because if you dare to look away for one minute, you might miss something. However, this doesn’t mean I don’t like what I do, I’m just being straight up: blogging is hard work but I love it so it’s rewarding (how Hallmark of me).

I birthed Pop Culture Major in August so it’s a baby but it’s growing and getting there. Aside from the above, I also started the blog because I am a pop culture groupie: I know a lot of useless trivia about TV shows, music, movies, etc. I couldn’t tell you squat about the history of my country but I can look at a photo of Rihanna and tell you what year it was taken, tell you which artist had the best selling album of all time (Michael Jackson, if you’re nasty!) and could probably kick your ass in Trivial Pursuit. I could talk your ear off about anything pop culture related all day and I will but that’s for another post.
I’m married with two hounds (one of whom is a puppy) so between blogging and dealing with that, I can get kinda tired out but I love doing it. There’s a lot of Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Rihanna on there but that’s to be expected since they’re such huge stars. However, nothing makes me happier than seeing a news item about Lindsay Lohan, Kim Kardashian or Courtney Stodden (http://www.popculturemajor.com/tag/courtney-stodden/); I get to perfect my wit and snark every time I write about them. My favorite post has been the one about Coco (Ice-T’s wife) and her dog shopping in Miami because she retweeted the link (http://www.popculturemajor.com/2011/11/09/spotted-coco-and-her-english-bulldogs-day-of-retail-therapy/) and sent great traffic to my blog: that made my year.
Another perk was interviewing an up and coming singer named Doxi Jones (http://www.doxijones.com/), which blew my mind because it was the first time I ever interviewed a celebrity or anyone in the entertainment industry. Her interview will be up soon and I hope get the opportunity to interview more celebs. I also added someone else to the PCM team – my friend Monica, who loves “Clueless” and fashion since I know crap all about the latter. If you’re into free gifts, the holidays are coming up and we plan on having a giveaway so you don’t wanna miss that! We also have a Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/popculturemajor) so like us if you’re into us.

Summer Goth

shoes: deena & ozzy, sunglasses: karen walker (I feel like I should get some other sunglasses because I wear these so often but they just got with everything), skirt and top: ASOS.

I bought these shoes a few months ago and actually forgot all about them until a couple of days ago! I’m still really wanting some proper black and white saddle shoes but maybe these will tide me over for a few weeks. After looking at these photos I think I need to take a couple of darts in the top just under the shoulders, that might be my next attempt-to-sew adventure. I do really like how it’s sheer but not super obviously see through though.

Instagram Thursday!

So as I said the other day in my 2011 wrap up post, I want to start doing a couple more regular features here on Fat Aus. I’m going to do a bit of an Instagram round up post every other Friday to show you guys some photos of what I’ve been up to since it’s a lot easier to take photos with my iPhone than to carry around my big DSLR everywhere.

Pretty into this bag/shoe combo (shoes from Urban Outfitters, bag c/o JezzyBelles)

If you were in Melbourne on Monday you’ll understand why I cooled Zigmond down with some water – it was 40 degrees Celsius! Too hot for furry kitties.

The hot cats in their fur coats.

I made some little zucchini pizza bites for dinner the other night.

I got so addicted to playing Pokemon Snap on N64 that I tried downloading an emulator so that I could play it on my MacBook but I couldn’t get it to work properly :(

Looking grumpy while drinking cocktails before Christmas

My first attempt at making strawberry jam – it turned out pretty delicious.
