I’ve noticed that I get a lot of traffic from people searching for images/stories/whatever about girls with half shaved heads so I thought I would do everyone a favour and write a blog post all about it. In August 2009 I shaved almost half my hair and lived to tell the tale so here goes.
It all begins with a big girl crush on the British model Alice Dellal:
Whatta babe, right?! What an awesome haircut. How can you not love her?! After a couple of weeks of longingly looking at photos of her and wishing I looked half way that cool, I took the plunge:
To begin with I was a little apprehensive so the first time I had it shaved (by a guy I had just met that night after a couple of beers to be totally honest) I think I went with a number 3 or something. I decided to keep a bit of a sideburn hair thing because it reminded me Chelsea cuts which I think are really awesome. Just a quick warning – as I’m going to post a mixture of photos taken with Photobooth and regular photos it’s going to look like it switches between which side of my head was shaved because the Photobooth shots are mirror images so in case anyone gets confused, I shaved the right side of my head.
To be honest I didn’t really consider this to be a super dramatic or shocking haircut but be warned – I had shaved my head before. This was me when I was 16:
so it didn’t feel like such a huge deal to me, it’s only hair you know? But if you’ve never had an extreme hairstyle before and especially if you have long hair, shaving a big chunk of it off is probably going to be a bit scary. That said, I could easily just part my hair differently and pretty much hide the shaved bit completely:
If you want to be able to do this just make sure you keep the shaved part to 1/3 or less of your head. Then it’s easy to just part it on the side and pull your hair across.
Ok so here are a bunch of photo of what it looked like most of the time:
I had this haircut for somewhere between six and nine months and I had to re-shave my head about every month. After the first unsure shave at the number three I stopped being a wimp and shaved it closer to my head because it looked better and then I didn’t have to re-shave it as often. As you may have noticed I also bleached the regrowth at some point.
I’ve had a few people ask me what this haircut looks like if you want to put your hair in a ponytail so I found some photos of that too:
Eventually I got sick of re-shaving my head every month and just parted my hair so that it covered the shaved bit while I grew it out:
After a few months the once shaved side looked like this:
By now it’s all the same length as the rest of my hair. If the difference in length really bugs you, you can always get extensions until it properly grows out. So that’s about it, I hope this was helpful and informative but if there’s anything I left out that you’re wondering about feel free to ask. Also, now I really miss being a redhead!

Damn, you look amazing no matter what style/colour your hair is! The red hair is stunning! I’ve shaved half of my hair, but my hair was a lot shorter, I think it looks so much better when down with long hair!

Wow I’m glad I found this. I’m thinking of getting this after I graduate from school. though do you have to shave on the side of your natural parting? I’m kinda confused about that bit :/

I’m really glad that you made a post about this! I think I’d be too terrified to try it on myself (I’m terrified to even dye my hair outside my brunette comfort zone), but you looked such a babe with it. You’re a babe now. All in all, you can do no wrong when it comes to hair.

Love the hair but wonder if I’m to old at 40 to do it. Do you have any photos of the back and is it easy to get a friend to shave rather than a hair dresser ?

So i’ve had a part of my head shaved for a few months now and it’s been fun. had the shaved part dyed leopard print, but i also miss my old Bettie Page bangs. I’ve been growing my hair and my bangs out for almost a year and my bangs have gotten to about the middle of my face.
What i want to know is would it look weird if i got my Bettie Bangs back and still left that side shaved? would i be able to part my hair over to one side if i want the shaved part shown? Hope that makes sense!

I have a heart shaped face but I’m kind of chubby. Right no I have medium length hair so I’d like to wait till its a bit longer but how would this hair style look on someone with my type of face?

heyy, ive been wanting to kinda shave half my head. i want to do it like you, with the longer hair other than straight up shaving it… my question is, does it look good in a pony tail?and does this have a name?

I was thinking of doing this, but not sure if it would suit my face shape or my hair length. But my face is shape is similar to yours, and your side shave looked awesome! But my hair is down past my butt, so might be too long to pull off this style…

Glad to read your post. I have been thinking of doing something different after my wedding since I will be cutting my long hair shorter soon. I love side shave hair style although I’m not sure if I am suitable for this but I might just try it. Just a little worried about how it will be like when I decide to grow it back. I’ll remember to keep it about 1/3 like you mentioned.

I’ve been wanting to do this kind of haircut for three years now! I saw Cyndi Lauper’s hairstyle when it was halfshaved and just fell in love with the cut! I convinced my parents to let me by telling them that if I shave 1/3 of my my head I can just part my hair differently and it’ll hide it. Now I just need pictures and will be getting it done tomorrow or the day after

Hi! so last year i shaved half my head because of Anya on project runway, well after a while i got sick of it (now everyone does it!
) well anyways i got sick of it so i also just started parting it differently, but i do not want to get a bob because in four months it is now bob length! yay! but i want to keep my long hair, so if i just keeping parting it to hid will they look the same on both sides?

I think you are so pretty. I love the way your hair is shaved on one side and your long flowing hair on the other. I think you have a really pretty face and you could really go far in the fashion/whatever industry you desire.

Hiya, um I shaved half my head ( I mean half like the whole frigen side all the way up to the center of my head) its about an inch long im 13 and starting highschool next year and the dress code says STRICTLY no wacky hairdos just a question, how can i cover it Im looking into clip in extentions but im not sure its long enough…. Hi there. I have been planning to shave side of my hair for long time. But I didn’t have guts to do so, because of family and some friends not supporting. And I was worrying if there wouldn’t be any guy hit on me…(actually I don’t really care).. After reading your post, suddenly feel get motivated, just shave the hair.. it will grow. You do look very good with the side cut, I just did mine today by myself…everyone told me not to but the razor stared me down in the bathroom lol anyway I love it! Don’t worry about the shape of your face you can always pull your hair over if you really want to test the look get cane rows on the part your considering to shave it gives that illusion
